Thataway Privacy Policy

Effective October 23, 2026

No account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking. Your runs stay on your iPhone, your Apple Watch and in Apple Health.

Who runs Thataway

Thataway is developed and published by Abokado Labs. Contact hello@abokadolabs.com.

Data stored on your devices

Thataway stores the routes you plan, downloaded offline maps and turn directions, your run history and Pain Points, your thresholds, units and other settings on your iPhone, and the routes and settings you send to your Apple Watch. Crash and performance reports that iOS provides to the app are kept on your iPhone and not sent anywhere. Nothing is synced to Abokado Labs.

Deleting the app removes this data, except what iOS keeps in a device backup. Runs saved to Apple Health stay in Health until you delete them there.

Apple Health

With your permission, the iPhone app reads your running workouts, heart rate, running power and workout routes from Apple Health to show your history and work out Pain Points. The Apple Watch app reads live heart rate during a run and saves the runs it records, with their routes, to Apple Health.

Health data is never used for advertising and is never sent to Abokado Labs or anyone else, except a run you choose to upload to Strava. You can change what Thataway may read or write at any time in the Health app or in iOS Settings.

Location

On iPhone, Thataway uses your location to start a route where you are and, when you open the app, to prepare a map of your area for your Apple Watch; your iPhone draws that map itself. On Apple Watch, it uses your location to record your route and guide you during an outdoor run. Thataway asks for While Using the App access, never Always. You can deny or revoke location access in iOS Settings.

To give your runs a name and their weather, the iPhone sends one point from each run’s route, once per run, without any account or identifier: to Apple’s map service to find the place’s name (for example, “Karura Forest”), under Apple’s privacy policy; and, with the run’s start and finish times, through the Abokado Labs relay to WeatherAPI.com for the weather at the time of the run.

If you go off course and ask your Apple Watch to reroute, the Watch sends your current position and the route ahead to the Abokado Labs relay to work out a new way back. Nothing else is sent, and the relay doesn’t keep it.

Route planning

To work out a route, the points you place on the map are sent to the Abokado Labs routing relay, which runs on Cloudflare, and on to its routing provider, Geoapify. Only the route points and the kind of route you asked for are sent: no account, name or device identifier.

Answers may be cached for up to a week so the same request, such as reopening a route, doesn’t have to be worked out twice. The cache is keyed by the route, not by who asked, and nothing links a request to a person or device. The relay uses your IP address briefly to limit how many requests one connection can make, and does not store it. See Geoapify’s privacy policy.

Maps and elevation

Maps on iPhone and Apple Watch come from OpenFreeMap. Your iPhone draws the Watch’s maps and sends them to the Watch; the Watch doesn’t download maps on its own. Elevation for climbs and profiles comes from Mapterhorn. Like any web request, a tile request shows the server roughly which area is being viewed. No account or identifier is sent.

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under ODbL. Map credits are in the app’s About screen.

Weather

Run weather (temperature, conditions, humidity and wind) comes from WeatherAPI.com. It is looked up once per run as described under Location, kept with the run on your iPhone and shown on the run’s page. The relay holds the WeatherAPI.com key, passes the answer back and does not keep it. See WeatherAPI.com’s privacy policy.

Directions voice

The optional Isabella voice for spoken street names is downloaded from Hugging Face, a public model host, when you choose to download it. The download is a file request like any other: no account or personal information is sent. Directions are then made and spoken on your iPhone, without sending anything to a speech service.

Strava

Strava is optional. Nothing is sent to Strava until you connect your account. After that, Thataway uploads only the runs you record with Thataway, not runs from other apps in Apple Health. Uploads happen automatically a few minutes after a run; you can turn this off in Thataway’s Settings.

Runs uploaded to Strava get Thataway’s name for the run and, if you leave “Add to Strava descriptions” on, a line of weather in the description. You can change both on Strava afterwards. Runs already on Strava are never changed by Thataway.

Strava sign-in goes through the Abokado Labs relay, which holds the app’s Strava credentials so they don’t have to be stored in the app. The relay passes Strava’s answer straight back to your iPhone and does not log or keep it. Your Strava tokens are stored in the iPhone keychain. What Strava does with an uploaded run is covered by Strava’s privacy policy.

What Abokado Labs does not collect

We do not collect your name, email address, account, contacts, advertising identifier, analytics, cross-app tracking data or payment details. We do not receive your runs, heart rate, running power, history or thresholds. The only things that pass through Abokado Labs are the requests described above (route points, reroutes, a run’s weather point and Strava sign-in), handled in passing by the relay and not kept.

Deleting your data

Delete a run in Thataway to remove it from the app. Disconnect Strava in Thataway’s Settings to remove Thataway’s access: Thataway asks Strava to revoke it and deletes its Strava tokens from your iPhone. Runs already uploaded stay on Strava until you delete them there. Delete the app to remove everything it stores. Health data, including runs the Watch saved, is managed in the Health app.

Children

Thataway is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them.
