Stored on your Mac
Settings, forecasts, model allowance history, app traffic and process history, speed-test results and diagnostics are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/CombinedMeters and in the app's preferences. Weather keys you add are kept in your login Keychain. Clearing history in Settings → Privacy & Data removes the matching records.
Weather
To forecast for your chosen place, Infometers sends its coordinates to:
- MET Norway, DWD (through Bright Sky), Open-Meteo, NOAA's GFS model server (NOMADS) and, in the United States, the US National Weather Service. Open-Meteo also supplies the air quality index; coordinates sent to it are rounded to about 1 km.
- Apple Weather (WeatherKit), when it's available in your copy. At most once every 3 hours per Mac.
- NOAA's Aviation Weather Center, for nearby airport observations, if that's turned on.
- Any provider you add your own key for (WeatherAPI, Pirate Weather, Visual Crossing). Your key is sent only to that provider.
City searches use macOS's own geocoding. Current location uses macOS Location Services, only if you allow it.
Once a day Infometers reads a small settings file from abokadolabs.com (/infometers/config.json) that can pause Apple Weather for everyone. It sends nothing about you.
AI subscription usage (Models)
Infometers shows how much of your allowances you've used. It never reads or sends your prompts or conversations.
- Codex / ChatGPT: reads the sign-in your Codex CLI or ChatGPT app keeps in
~/.codex/auth.json(read-only; never changed) and asks chatgpt.com for your usage. If that fails it reads the limits Codex records in its own session logs. Your installed Codex is also run occasionally to read daily activity. - Claude, status line (if you turn it on): adds a command to Claude Code's settings (
~/.claude/settings.json, backed up first) that saves the status Claude Code reports, including its usage limits, to Infometers' folder. Your previous status line keeps working. Turning it off restores it. - Claude, Live check (off unless you turn it on): reads Claude Code's sign-in from your Keychain and asks api.anthropic.com for your usage, at most every 5 minutes. The sign-in is never stored, renewed or changed.
- Claude, Infometers sign-in (if you sign in): runs your installed Claude Code with a separate sign-in kept by Infometers, to read your limits.
- Gemini (experimental, off unless you turn it on): a sign-in to gemini.google.com kept by Infometers, used to read the usage page.
- Local activity charts come from Codex and Claude Code's own log files on your Mac.
- Provider status comes from the public status pages of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Bandwidth and network
Traffic rates and which apps use the network are measured on your Mac; packet contents are never read. Infometers also:
- asks ipapi.co for your public IP's approximate location (it sees your public IP);
- checks connectivity with Apple's test address;
- times connections to your router, to 1.1.1.1 and a DNS lookup of www.apple.com for the Overview's path check;
- runs Apple's
networkQualityspeed test when you start one or schedule it.
System
CPU and memory per app are read from macOS (including the ps and top tools). Infometers records process names, CPU time and memory only. For script interpreters (such as node or python) it reads the arguments just long enough to label the script or package, and doesn't keep them.
Updates
Infometers checks abokadolabs.com for updates with Sparkle. The request includes the app and macOS versions. Release builds check automatically; you can also choose Check for Updates.
